Characters

Crooks, not killers

A boss in a gold jacket with a big smile, two goons who drive dirty, and nine racers who all signed a deal they shouldn't have.

Everyone drives the same truck. A character is a playstyle, not a stat stick: small bonuses, one signature trick, and a reason to race.

Fonz Monster

"Everybody gets paid!"

Role
Founder, promoter and eleven-time champion of the Dirty Racing league
Truck
Gold-chrome #1
Owns
Monster Holdings: the stadiums, the speed-shop chain, half the sponsors, and the armoured Payday van
Record
Has never lost a final. Never makes a mistake. Never scrutineered.

White teeth, a gold-chrome jacket and a catchphrase on every billboard. Fonz built Dirty Racing out of a dirt bowl and a loudspeaker, and he'll tell you about it. He'll also pay your entry fee, buy your debts and find you a seat, because he believes in you, kid.

He's a lovable rogue: a showman who winks at the camera and is never truly cruel. You'll half-like him even while he's robbing everyone. The league's books, though, don't quite add up. And that Payday van's engine has been running for three days now.

"Beat the boss, huh? Love it. Great for ticket sales."
"Easy, kid. Don't forget who signs the cheques."
"Keep at it, kid! Somebody has to finish behind me."

Fonz's favourite drivers

Skid & Dee

Two regulars who always seem to be wherever Fonz needs them. Funny, that.

Skid Marx, with a toothpick and a smirk
Skid Marx sneaking along, scattering tacks behind him

#13 · Black truck

Skid Marx

The dirtiest driver in the series.

Greasy slicked hair, a toothpick and an oil can in one pocket. Brakes late and drops everything he has.

"Nice truck. Shame about what's going to happen to it."
Dee Railer, pink mohawk, blowing a bubblegum bubble
Dee Railer sitting on the bonnet of her truck

#66 · Pink truck

Dee Railer

Queen of the crossover.

Bubblegum-pink jumpsuit, pink mohawk, always chewing. Hugs the inside line and leans on anybody who tries it too.

"Big pot this year. Be a shame if something happened to it."

Born in mud. Will die in mud. Would like to win something in between.

Mud Bomb + Mud Cannon
Known as
Swamp Thing, The Bog Monster, Splat, Mudpie

The story

Born in a camper van at a festival during a thunderstorm, so technically delivered by mud. Three times county mud-wrestling champion. Can hit a crow off a fence post with a mud ball from forty paces, and has the photos to prove it.

Why they signed

Monster Holdings is buying the family marsh for a stadium car park. Fonz promises to gift the land back as a nature reserve, if they win the Monster Invitational.

"Bulldozers? Leave them to me. You race for me, I save your marsh. Nature reserve. Handshake on it."Fonz Monster

On track

Soft, floaty suspension and mud everything: the Mud Bomb and Mud Cannon hit harder, and mud barely slows them down. Pays for it with a slightly weaker engine.

"Rain forecast? Lovely."
"You'll want your wipers on. Trust me."

Loose Tyre
Known as
Clodhopper, Tractor Beam, Haybale, Sticky

The story

Grew up on 900 acres of clay that turns to glue when it rains. Drove the ute at nine, before their feet reached the pedals (a brick did the braking).

Why they signed

Fonz bought the farm's debt "as a favour". Win one good season and he'll tear it up. Somehow there's always one more season.

"I bought your farm's debt this morning, kid. Win me one good season and I'll tear it up. Promise."Fonz Monster

On track

Grip for days: better tyres, a stronger Loose Tyre, and tack strips barely bother them. Gives up a little top speed.

"Dad says hi. Dad also says don't scratch it."
"This track's mostly clay. Bad news for you."

The story

The youngest championship leader in Formula Apex history, until a ban for an illegal fuel additive. Still irons the race suit, and still says "box, box" over the radio to nobody.

Why they signed

Fonz was the only one who called. "I believe you, kid. Come race for me." The additive in the tank was branded Monster Juice.

"I believe you, kid. Come race for me."Fonz Monster

On track

Pure pace: big top speed, a longer Grapple Hook and stronger nitro. Stiff, unforgiving suspension.

"Tow, overtake, gone. Slipstream physics; you wouldn't understand."
"Is that... a cow on the infield?"

Wrecking Ball, The Landlord, Excuse Me, Bulldozer

The story

A repo driver, fired for repossessing the mayor's car while the mayor was in it. Has a ram plough custom-welded with the words EXCUSE ME.

Why they signed

Fonz makes them Head of Stadium Security. Funny thing: the paperwork for a certain armoured van is in the Bully's name.

On track

Built to shove: extra engine, armour that soaks more punishment, and a cheaper, nastier Ram Plough.

"Move or be moved."
"Nothing personal. Actually, it's quite personal."

The story

Their thesis drone delivered toast into the vice-chancellor's open-top car at 80 km/h. Runs a racing channel with 312 subscribers, 300 of them bots they wrote.

Why they signed

Hired to rebuild the stadium timing system, they notice an account called MONSTER_PRIVATE sweeping money out every night.

On track

Gadget specialist: better suspension, a stronger Drone Drop and a discount on drones.

"Target acquired. Sorry. Not sorry. Slightly sorry."
"I've modelled this race 4,000 times. I win in 11 of them."

Known as
Grandpa Torque / Granny Torque, Old Faithful, The Teaspoon

The story

Forty years running Rattray's Repairs & Bait. Once rebuilt a gearbox with a teaspoon and a hairpin.

Why they signed

Fonz's speed-shop chain put Rattray's out of business. And the engine in Fonz's own truck? Rattray built it thirty years ago. It was never paid for.

On track

All engine: the biggest power bonus, extra top speed, stronger nitro, cheaper acceleration upgrades and two free nitro a season.

"Hear that? Neither do they. That's a proper engine."
"Back in my day we raced to the pub. And back."

Doubled for action stars in 140 films, until the studio switched to computers. "They replaced me with a bloke called Render."

Why they signed

Fonz promises them their own reality show, Monster Mud. The camera crew mostly seems to be filming the stadium vault.

On track

Lives in the air: the best suspension, extra air control and a longer Grapple Hook.

"Ramp ahead? Lovely. Cameras rolling?"
"That landing'll hurt tomorrow. Good thing it's today."

The story

Forced into retirement after deploying a spike strip on the police commissioner's limousine: 61 in a 60, no exceptions.

Why they signed

Working one last, unofficial case: the league's books don't add up.

"This league needs a sheriff, officer."Fonz Monster

On track

By the book: grippy tyres, heavy armour and a stronger Tack Strip. No weakness at all.

"Evening. Licence and lap times, please."
"Spikes deployed. As per procedure."

The story

Heir to Slickworth Petroleum ("We Put the Slick in Slick"), disinherited after driving through the shareholders' garden party. Finds the speed shop "charmingly retail".

Why they signed

Fonz is their godfather, and he "manages" the allowance.

On track

Fast and slippery: extra top speed, a nastier Oil Slick and a free one every season. Tyres suffer slightly.

"Mind the puddle, darling. It's vintage."
"Daddy's lawyers will be hearing about this corner."
